The Indian government has been accused of imposing unwarranted censorship on Pakistani art and culture under the guise of a “plotted conspiracy.” Pakistani actress Atiqa Odho believes that the Indian government has been using this tactic to suppress the creativity and free expression of Pakistani artists.
In a recent interview with a private media outlet, Odho discussed various topics and expressed her opinions on the current state of cultural relations between India and Pakistan. During the interview, she also spoke about the opposition faced by Pakistani artists in the Indian film industry and the lack of respect for cultural exchange and mutual admiration.
Odho revealed that in the past, Indian production houses were forced to create a special fund to cast Pakistani actors in their projects. This was allegedly a condition imposed by the Indian film industry, which was a clear example of the intersection of art and politics at that time.
Odho emphasized that such actions not only went against artistic freedom but also severely impacted the cultural exchange between the two nations. She said, “I must admit that I am divided on this issue. On one hand, I believe that there should be no boundaries to art, but on the other hand, every individual has the right to self-respect and dignity.”
Odho also stated that Pakistan has made significant efforts to improve relations with India through the arts, with many Pakistani dramas and films being popular in India as well. However, politics often gets in the way, and India has been consistently producing content that is critical of Pakistan.
She mentioned the example of the film “The Legend of Maula Jatt,” which was a huge success worldwide but was not released in India due to the Indian government’s objections. “This is not a matter of hate, but a matter of attitude,” Odho said.
