The Speaker of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, Babar Salim Swati, has written a formal letter to the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Malik Ahmad Khan, expressing deep concern over the unfortunate incidents that took place during their visit to the Punjab Assembly. The letter also requests Defense Minister Khawaja Asif to meet with Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sajjad Ahmed Turi, to condemn and resolve the issue.
The letter stated that the delegation led by the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa faced unwarranted behavior and unnecessary obstacles during their visit to the Punjab Assembly, which is against parliamentary traditions. Swati, in his letter, mentioned that the Chief Minister and his delegation members had to face repeated security checks, aggressive questioning, and physical restraint, which is unacceptable in any democratic and civilized system.
Chief Minister Sajjad Ahmed Turi responded to the letter by stating that the Punjab government is morally and psychologically bankrupt, with an undemocratic attitude. The letter also expressed concern over the incident where some members were bullied by security personnel and displayed an unacceptable behavior, which harmed the dignity of Parliament. Swati further stated that some individuals attempted to escalate the situation by posing as journalists, which affected the seriousness of the official visit.
The Speaker emphasized that provincial assemblies are constitutional institutions and that their relationships should be based on mutual respect, tolerance, and parliamentary etiquette. He requested that a thorough and transparent investigation be conducted into the incident, identify those responsible, and issue clear directives to prevent such incidents in the future. The Speaker warned that if such incidents are ignored, they could lead to damage to inter-provincial harmony and federal cooperation.
