A 68-year-old retired woman from Mumbai, India, has become the latest victim of an online scam. The scammers posed as former Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials, and police officers to trick her into transferring Rs 37.1 crore to their bank accounts. According to Indian media reports, the victim received a phone call in August, where the caller claimed to be a police officer. The caller then initiated a series of video calls on WhatsApp, using different mobile numbers.
The scammers claimed to have obtained the victim’s Aadhaar card details and used them to open a fake bank account. They claimed to have transferred Rs 6 crore through illegal transactions. When the victim refused to acknowledge the account, the scammers sent her fake documents with the CBI logo and a fake police complaint. They threatened to arrest her family members if she revealed anything about the scam.
The scammers convinced the victim that she was being monitored for 24 hours and that her case was being investigated. Despite her attempts to cut off the calls and not respond to OTPs, they managed to transfer money from her account. During this time, another person called her and introduced himself as “Justice Chandrachud.” He asked her questions and later informed her that her bail had been rejected.
The scammers then instructed the victim to transfer her remaining funds to bank accounts to “verify” them. Fearing for her safety, the victim transferred Rs 37.1 crore to various bank accounts. However, when the scammers demanded more money, she realized that she had been scammed.
The victim reported the incident to the Cyber Police and provided them with chat records, call details, bank statements, and transaction details. The Cyber Police are investigating the case.
