Begum Khaleda Zia, the Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and the party’s Acting Chairman, Tarique Rahman, have submitted their candidacy papers for the 13th National Parliamentary Elections, contesting on a total of five seats. The documents were submitted to the returning officers’ offices on the last day of nomination for the scheduled elections in February 2026. Begum Khaleda Zia’s medical team member and personal physician, Professor A. Z. M. Zahid Hussain, stated in a media interview that the decision was made on the recommendation of the medical board formed for her treatment.
Tarique Rahman has submitted his candidacy papers from two constituencies, including Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6, which is his ancestral constituency. Begum Khaleda Zia has submitted her papers from three constituencies, including Feni-1, Dinajpur-3, and Bogra-7 (Gobindaganj-Shahjahanpur). The party’s local leaders represented Begum Khaleda Zia at the time of submitting the papers, as she is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital due to her health issues.
The Student Nationalist Party has decided to contest the elections in alliance with the Jamaat-e-Islami. Begum Khaleda Zia’s medical condition has been described as severe, with her being currently under intensive care in a hospital. The medical team has recommended further tests, which will be carried out after the results are available. The party has named an alternative candidate for Begum Khaleda Zia’s constituency.
Begum Khaleda Zia was first elected from the same constituency in the 1991 National Parliamentary Elections. She has also been elected from this constituency in 1996 and 2001. The party’s executive member, Syed Jahangir Alam, submitted the papers for Dinajpur-3 constituency.
