According to a statement by theater owner and producer Manoj Desai, both actors refused to buy awards during their prime, when it was allegedly common practice to offer trophies in exchange for financial gains. In a YouTube interview, Manoj recalled an incident where he, Amitabh Bachchan, and Rafeeq Ahmed (late film writer) were present at an awards function. Ahmed approached Manoj and asked him to give an award to Amitabh Bachchan in exchange for covering the entire cost of the party. Manoj claimed that Amitabh Bachchan strongly rejected the offer, saying, “I don’t buy awards.” When asked about it, Amitabh Bachchan reportedly said that he knew who would receive the award, which would go to Anil Kapoor, and that he had already planned a grand party at his home. Anil Kapoor did win the Best Actor award that year, reportedly for his film Mr. India. However, Manoj’s claim contradicts the fact that Anil Kapoor did not win the award for Mr. India (1987). He received his first Best Actor award for the film Tezaab in 1989, the same year Amitabh Bachchan was nominated for his film Shahenshah in the same category. Manoj also claimed that Dharmendra, like Amitabh Bachchan, followed the same principle of not buying awards. Dharmendra, a legendary Bollywood actor and “He-Man,” passed away on November 24, 2022, at the age of 89.
