Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revealed on social media platform X that President Trump has ordered the US Citizenship and Immigration Services to halt the program, citing the shooting incident as a reason. Noem expressed her reaction to the incident, stating that the perpetrator should never have entered the country.
According to British media reports, the suspect’s body was found in a warehouse, and the 48-year-old Portuguese man, Claudio Manuel Neves Velasque, was killed by self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Authorities claim that Velasque, who was a Portuguese citizen, had entered the United States in 2017 under the Diversity Visa Program and had been granted a Green Card. Velasque is accused of shooting two students at Brown University, killing them, and injuring nine others, while also killing an MIT professor. He later took his own life, and his body was recovered.
It’s worth noting that the Diversity Visa Program was created by Congress and aimed to provide opportunities to citizens of countries with limited representation in the United States, including several African countries.
