Bollywood singer Kumar Sanu has filed a defamation case against his ex-wife, Rita Bhattacharya, in the Mumbai High Court. The singer has accused his former wife of leveling false and defamatory allegations against him in various media interviews, which have damaged his reputation.
According to reports, Kumar Sanu has claimed that Rita Bhattacharya’s allegations are a clear violation of the agreement they had reached in 2001, when they mutually decided to divorce. The singer has stated that her statements have caused him severe mental distress, social stigma, and financial loss.
Kumar Sanu has requested the court to order Rita Bhattacharya to pay him Rs. 30 lakh as damages, remove the offending interviews, and refrain from making similar statements in the future. Rita Bhattacharya had made serious allegations against Kumar Sanu in September 2025, including claims of physical abuse, neglect, and infidelity.
The defamation case is scheduled to be heard on December 17, and Kumar Sanu’s lawyers will present their arguments in court. Kumar Sanu has two wives, with Rita Bhattacharya being his first wife, whom he married in 1986 and divorced in 2001. His second wife, Saloni Bhattacharya, is the mother of his two daughters.
The case has sparked a debate in the entertainment industry, with many celebrities weighing in on the issue. Jaaved Akhtar, a well-known actor and singer, has stated that the case should not be seen as a justification for domestic violence or abuse.
