The Sindh government has intensified efforts to resolve Karachi’s protracted water crisis, following a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah. The CM stressed the imperative of ensuring a sustainable water supply for the metropolitan area and reviewed progress on several critical infrastructure projects.
During the session, CM Shah affirmed the provincial government’s commitment to expediting plans designed to meet the city’s burgeoning water requirements. He reiterated that the flagship K-IV Project remains central to this strategy, promising to deliver 260 million gallons per day (MGD) upon completion.
The meeting reviewed the status of the K-IV expansion, the 260 MGD Bulk Water Supply scheme, the lining of the Keenjhar-Baghiar (KB) Feeder, and development plans related to the Hub Dam. Officials briefed the CM that work on the main K-IV Project has been underway since 2020 under the supervision of WAPDA, focusing on an advanced pressurized pipeline system designed to permanently alleviate Karachi’s water shortages.
**Key Directives and Implementation Milestones:**
CM Shah emphasized that the completion of the electricity supply mechanism is a prerequisite for the full operationalization of the K-IV pipeline. He was informed that the internal K-IV extension work within Karachi is progressing, with pipeline installation rapidly advancing along University Road.
Discussions also focused on integrating the new bulk water supply lines into the existing distribution network. Authorities confirmed that immediate support would be provided to District East and District West via the R-1 system, while the 66-inch line connecting Gulshan-e-Mimar and the R-2 system are slated for stabilization.
The Chief Minister issued strict directives to mobilize resources effectively within the limited construction window, citing the crucial milestone posed by the annual closure of the Kotri Barrage in December.
Furthermore, CM Shah approved the immediate release of necessary funds for the maintenance of the Hub Dam and called for the rapid rehabilitation of the Right Bank Outfall Drain (RBOD) drainage system. He concluded by mandating a coordinated approach between WAPDA and the Sindh Irrigation Department to ensure seamless project execution.
