Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar has strongly asserted that the fundamental responsibility for protecting citizens’ sensitive data lies squarely with the state, irrespective of whether that information is held by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) or the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). His statement highlights the critical balance between security requirements and privacy protection.
Speaking on the Geo News program ‘Naya Pakistan,’ Atta Tarar stressed that enhanced data collection measures are necessary for effectively combating and eradicating terrorism. He cited global precedents, arguing that crimes in major metropolises like London, New York, Tokyo, and Beijing are routinely traced and solved with the aid of sophisticated ‘Safe City’ cameras.
The Minister called for decisive security enhancements, stating that the time has come to implement robust measures for the protection of individuals and children. He proposed that vehicles should be equipped not only with ‘M-Tags’ but also mandatory ‘Red Tags.’
Tarar pointed out a critical gap in security protocols, noting that under the existing ‘Red Tag’ system, tenants often fail to submit their essential data. He argued that police and civil administration must be empowered to mandate this registration, as terrorists frequently utilize unregistered safe houses before carrying out attacks.
In concluding his remarks, he also strongly condemned the actions of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members who post the names of journalists on social media platforms.
