The historical city of Lahore is currently facing a severe environmental emergency, having been ranked as the second most polluted city globally today. This alarming concentration of pollutants in the air poses an immediate and grave threat to the health of millions of its residents.
According to the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings, the overall particulate matter (PM) recorded across Lahore reached an extremely hazardous level of 429. This figure places the city firmly in the ‘Hazardous’ category, forcing citizens to contend with heavy smog and an increase in respiratory illnesses.
The crisis is particularly acute in several localized areas where pollution levels spiked to record highs. The highest concentration was registered in the Ravi Road area, where the PM level astonishingly reached 1198. Other significantly affected areas included the Civil Secretariat with 810 PM, Sanda Road with 753 PM, and Gulberg, which recorded a dangerously high 706 Particulate Matter level.
Environmental experts have expressed deep concern over the deteriorating air quality and have urgently called upon the authorities to implement immediate and comprehensive measures. The goal is to tackle this pressing public health crisis and ensure that the citizens of Lahore can once again breathe clean air.
