PESHAWAR, PAKISTAN:
Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Suhail Afridi, delivered a resolute and defiant speech today amidst ongoing political friction between the provincial and federal governments. His comments were made while addressing a ceremony marking the founding day of the Islamic Students Federation (ISF).
Reiterating his political commitment, CM Afridi stated that his primary intention is to meet his political leader by following the constitutional path. In a strong message aimed at perceived external pressures, he declared emphatically, “No one can pressure us.” This statement is widely interpreted as a firm political signal against any attempt by the federal administration or powerful quarters to exert undue influence on the provincial leadership.
Mr. Afridi stressed that he is not acting hastily, stating he is “playing calmly for now.” He asserted his identity as the Chief Minister of 45 million people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, underscoring his reliance on provincial autonomy and the strong backing of the populace as his source of strength.
Towards the close of his address, he posed a metaphor-rich question to the public, drawing parallels from cricket: “The public should decide whether their Chief Minister should bat in a Test match or a One-Day match.” This analogy suggests a contemplation of his political strategy—whether to pursue a long, cautious political battle (Test Match) or adopt a swift and aggressive approach (One-Day). His remarks signify an intent to base his critical future decisions on popular support and mandate.
