What began as a joyous occasion in Pakistan’s northwest quickly led to a stern law enforcement response after a video showing excessive aerial firing at a wedding ceremony went viral on social media. The incident, which took place in the Tehkal area of Peshawar, was swiftly noticed by authorities, resulting in the arrest of the groom and eleven other individuals involved.
This incident underscores the perilous tradition of celebratory firing prevalent in certain parts of Pakistan during social events, particularly weddings, which poses a significant threat to public safety and order. Following the widespread circulation of the video, senior Peshawar Police officials intervened immediately, identifying and apprehending those responsible for the reckless discharge of firearms.
According to the Peshawar Police, a substantial cache of illegal weapons was recovered from the possession of the arrested individuals. The seized arms include one LMG (Light Machine Gun), one M4 Rifle, two Kalashnikovs, and one pistol. The presence of such heavy weaponry adds a layer of seriousness to the ritual and raises questions about the intent of those involved.
The police have formally registered a case at the Tehkal police station against all the arrested suspects, and an official investigation is now underway. This decisive action by the local administration sends a strong message against the dangerous cultural practice of celebratory firing, which frequently results in the tragic loss of innocent lives.
