Lahore, Pakistan: Global efforts to eradicate polio in Pakistan have once again been met with fierce local resistance and violence. A Polio team was attacked near Lahore’s Gondal Scheme Chandraye, resulting in a female polio worker sustaining a severe head injury. A formal police complaint has been registered regarding the incident.
According to Express News, health department sources reported that the attack occurred during the polio campaign when a woman refused to administer polio drops to her children. The female polio worker, Saba Taj, attempted to counsel the mother. Instead of cooperating, the woman, along with her two daughters, launched an attack on the team.
Assault with Bricks and Legal Action: The female polio worker was assaulted with bricks, causing Saba Taj’s head to be seriously wounded, and she was immediately rushed to the hospital. The attackers also destroyed the vaccination carrier containing the life-saving polio doses. These assaults highlight the constant threats faced by health workers dedicated to protecting the nation from preventable diseases.
The police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on the complaint filed by UCMO Ayaz Ashraf, and legal proceedings have been initiated against the attackers. The incident underscores the urgent need to ensure the security of health personnel across the country.
