Bratislava, Slovakia: The safety record of Slovakia’s rail network has been brought into sharp focus once again following a collision between two passenger trains, which resulted in dozens of passengers being injured. While authorities have offered some relief by confirming no immediate fatalities, the severity of the incident has triggered alarm across the European nation.
Slovak Interior Minister Matúš Šutaj Eštok addressed the media, confirming the accident took place approximately 20 kilometers northeast of the capital, Bratislava. The Minister stated that dozens of people were injured, with 11 of the most seriously hurt individuals being transported to hospitals for urgent medical care.
Eštok confirmed that initial reports indicated no deaths resulted from the crash, a fortunate outcome given the nature of the collision. However, the high number of injuries and the rapid succession of such events raise critical questions regarding the country’s railway safety protocols and infrastructure maintenance.
Significantly, this accident comes barely a month after Slovakia experienced a previous train collision that left 91 people injured. These back-to-back incidents underscore the urgent necessity for the Slovakian authorities to implement immediate and comprehensive measures to improve the security and reliability of the national rail network, ensuring the safety of public transport for commuters.
