Brisbane, Australia — Cricket Australia (CA) has incurred a significant financial blow following the washout of the fifth and final T20 International between Australia and India in Brisbane. The loss from this single abandoned match is estimated to be around one million Australian dollars, which converts to approximately 181.7 million Pakistani Rupees.
Primary Reason for the Loss:
The match was halted due to heavy rain and thunderstorms after less than six overs of play had been completed, and it could not be resumed.
Australian media reports indicate that under the tournament rules, fans are entitled to a full ticket refund if less than six overs are played. As a result, CA had to issue full refunds to 31,074 cricket fans, making it a “very expensive night” for the governing body.
Match Status and Series Outcome:
At the time the match was called off, India had scored 52 runs in 4.5 overs without losing any wickets. The abandonment of the final game meant that Australia also lost the T20 series.
Brisbane was Australia’s last chance to level the series, but due to the rain-hit ending, India clinched the series 2-1. Thus, Cricket Australia faced the double setback of a financial loss and a series defeat in the same evening.
