Islamabad — A new political controversy has erupted in Pakistan as the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has sharply criticized the removal of its member from the Parliament’s Law and Justice Committee, terming the move an act of “worst dictatorship.” The strong condemnation was issued by JUI-F spokesperson, Aslam Ghauri.
In a statement, Aslam Ghauri severely criticized the current political climate, asserting that “dictatorship is being fostered in the name of democracy” and that ruling factions are attempting to “overturn the entire democratic system.”
According to the spokesperson, Senator Kamran Murtaza’s name was withdrawn from the committee notification merely based on the suspicion that he might dissent from certain governmental positions. Ghauri expressed confusion as to the basis on which a name included in the first notification was subsequently deleted from the second.
Ghauri issued a stern warning to the ruling party: “The committee is the property of the Parliament; the government should not treat it as the domain of the (N) League.” This statement clearly accuses the ruling coalition of utilizing parliamentary affairs to serve its narrow political interests.
The incident highlights the growing friction within the Parliament regarding the rights of opposition members and the extent of the government’s influence over legislative committees.
