In a significant move of political outreach, a high-level delegation from the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Pakistan met with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his residence to seek support for their draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. The meeting underscores the critical political maneuvering underway as coalition partners and opposition parties define their stance on constitutional reforms aimed at decentralizing power.
The MQM delegation, which included Governor Sindh Kamran Khan Tessori, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Mustafa Kamal, and Farooq Sattar, presented the proposed constitutional draft to Maulana Fazlur Rehman.
Speaking to the media after the talks, MQM leader Mustafa Kamal emphasized that this amendment is not merely a political demand but a vital necessity for the people of Pakistan. He asserted that MQM’s alliance with the government is based on a single-point agenda: ensuring the transfer of resources and authority directly to the people at the grassroots level.
Kamal criticized the current system, stating that while the 18th Constitutional Amendment increased the financial share for provinces, the mechanism for delivering facilities and benefits to the common citizen remains fundamentally flawed. He claimed that the MQM’s proposed amendment is the only viable solution for genuinely devolving powers. He also recalled that this draft was previously presented for the 26th Amendment but failed to gain approval.
He confirmed that the Prime Minister has indicated support for their constitutional amendment draft, which the party is now sharing with all political factions in the country. After submitting the document to the JUI-F chief, Kamal stressed that this is not just an “MQM draft,” but a “draft for Pakistan,” and appealed to all political forces to back this crucial reform initiative.
