Niamh Sheikh, a player for the Scottish Women’s Cricket Team and of Pakistani descent, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first cricketer in the country to receive the prestigious Scottish National Sports Scholarship.
Niamh Sheikh has been selected for this year’s Winning Students 100 Scotland National Sport Scholarship program. This scholarship is designed to support student athletes who successfully balance their academic pursuits with their sporting ambitions.
The Scottish woman cricketer expressed her delight at the honor, stating:
“It is an honour for me to be the first cricketer, men or women, in Scotland to have received this scholarship.”
Academic and Career Profile:
- Education: Niamh Sheikh is currently studying Accountancy and Finance at the University of Glasgow.
- Cricket Career: She made her international debut in 2023 and has since represented Scotland in two One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 7 Twenty20 (T20) matches.
Cricket Scotland confirmed that Niamh Sheikh is the first cricketer from Scotland to be awarded this scholarship. The program supports over 1,700 student athletes across various Scottish sports, with selections based on academic qualifications.
This year, a total of 105 student athletes from 31 different disciplines, including Niamh Sheikh, have been included in the scholarship to provide them with support in achieving their sporting goals alongside their education.
