In a significant political development, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Shazia Marri has revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has requested support from President Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto for the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
Speaking on the program ‘Geo Pakistan’, Marri confirmed that the speculation surrounding the 27th Amendment is true and that the government has formally contacted the PPP regarding this matter. However, she clarified that any decision regarding this major constitutional change will be based on the party’s principled stance and will ultimately be decided by the PPP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC).
Shazia Marri reiterated her party’s firm position on provincial autonomy, stating that the 18th Amendment is non-negotiable. “It will neither be appropriate nor possible to roll back the provincial powers granted in the 18th Amendment… it is very close to the hearts of the provinces,” she asserted.
She added that discussing public issues remains the top priority. “Our focus should be on real problems like terrorism, the economic situation, unemployment, and the hardships of flood victims who have endured great suffering,” Marri stated. “We have never engaged in a war of words.” She also emphasized that crucial decisions, such as those related to the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP), should not be made “behind closed doors.”
