Residents of Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, are breathing dangerously polluted air today, as the city’s air quality has been recorded as “extremely unhealthy.”
The latest data from the Air Quality Index (AQI) is alarming. It shows that Karachi now ranks as the third most polluted city in the entire world.
According to the report, the pollution level in the city’s air has reached 236 particulate matter.
To put this figure into context, the official AQI scale considers a reading of 151 to 200 as “unhealthy.” Any reading between 201 and 300, where Karachi currently stands, is classified as “very unhealthy.” A level above 301 is considered “hazardous.” This severe pollution poses a significant and immediate health risk to the city’s millions of inhabitants.
