Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has praised the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for a significant achievement, as the number of tax returns filed in the country reached a record high of 5.9 million (59 lakh).
Sharif stated that the addition of 900,000 (9 lakh) new taxpayers to the tax net is a clear indicator of the public’s confidence in the government’s policies. “By the grace of Allah, the reforms in our tax system are yielding positive results,” he remarked.
Detailing these reforms, the Prime Minister noted that merit has been given top priority within the FBR, and a new “performance culture” has been introduced. He added that the tax filing system was simplified to make it easier for citizens to comply.
He also highlighted other economic measures, explaining that an automated clearance system at ports has helped eliminate corruption and improve operational performance. Similarly, the increase in the number of Point of Sale (POS) terminals has been crucial in preventing sales tax evasion.
Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that the resulting 9 billion rupee increase in tax revenue is “living proof” of the success of these FBR reforms. He affirmed that the process of further reforming the FBR system will continue.
