Bangladesh’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has filed a major case against Jahangir Alam, a former office assistant (peon) to the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, on serious charges of laundering 100 Crore Taka (approximately 1 billion Taka).
The case was lodged at a police station in Noakhali after preliminary investigations uncovered substantial evidence.
The investigation report tells a startling story. Jahangir initially worked as a daily-wage employee at the National Parliament Secretariat. His fortunes allegedly changed in 2009 when the Awami League came to power, and he was temporarily assigned to the Prime Minister’s Office as a personal aide. According to the CID, it was during this time that he began to illegally gain significant financial benefits.
In 2010, Jahangir established a company called “Sky Rearrange Limited,” which operated as a distributor for mobile financial services. However, a review of the company’s accounts revealed suspicious transactions totaling over 565 Crore Taka between 2010 and 2024.
The CID noted that a large portion of these funds was deposited in cash from across the country, amounts that were inconsistent with the company’s stated business activities. The source of these funds could not be identified, and initial evidence points strongly toward money laundering and “Hundi” (illegal remittance) operations.
The investigation also found that Jahangir, his wife Kamrun Nahar, and his brother Munir Hussain were involved in these illegal financial dealings for years.
As the political situation in Bangladesh shifted, Jahangir and his wife fled the country. They moved to the United States in June 2024 and are currently residing in Virginia. The CID confirmed that no official permissions were found for their foreign investments or properties.
Initial evidence suggests that between 2010 and 2024, Jahangir, his wife, his brother, and his company illegally transferred approximately 100 Crore Taka abroad. The CID stated that efforts are ongoing to identify others involved and to trace the full extent of the financial network.
