IRAQ/TURKEY: The Kurdish militant group, Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), made a significant announcement on Sunday, stating it is withdrawing its fighters from Turkey and relocating them to northern Iraq as part of a peace agreement with the Turkish government.
This major development follows a symbolic disarmament ceremony held by the group in northern Iraq just a few months ago, signaling a serious step toward ending the decades-long conflict.
According to news agencies reporting from Ankara, the PKK has framed this withdrawal as part of its process of laying down arms.
In a news conference held in northern Iraq, Sabri Ok, a member of the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK), confirmed the move. He stated that all PKK forces currently inside Turkey are being recalled to their bases in the northern Iraq region.
Ok explained that the decision was made “to avoid any clashes or provocations” during this sensitive period, ensuring that the fragile peace process is not derailed.
