In another harrowing incident of caste-based violence in India, a Dalit (lower-caste) youth in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, was brutally killed, allegedly by upper-caste men, on the day of his birthday.
The tragic incident occurred on the night of October 15 in the Rabupura area. The victim, Ankit, who worked as a mechanic and driver, was celebrating outside his home and cutting his birthday cake when he was attacked. According to reports, the assailants taunted him for his caste, asking, “Teri aukat kya hai?” (“What is your status?”).
The victim’s uncle revealed that Ankit had been receiving threats for several weeks, suggesting the fatal assault was not a random act of violence.
The murder has sparked intense grief and tension in the Ambedkar locality of Greater Noida, a predominantly Dalit neighborhood. Reflecting the volatile situation, Ankit’s body was brought home under a heavy security presence.
Police have stated that two individuals have been arrested in connection with the murder, and a search for other suspects is underway. Given the political sensitivity of the incident, local BJP MLA Dhirendra Singh has assured the family of “strict action” from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Leaders from the BSP and Samajwadi Party also visited the victim’s home to offer their condolences.
