LONDON — British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has announced £10 million in additional funding to protect the country’s Muslim community and mosques from rising hate incidents and targeted attacks.
The announcement came during Starmer’s visit to a mosque in East Sussex alongside Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, where they met with local Muslim leaders and the mosque’s imam to discuss community safety and cohesion.
Speaking at the mosque, Starmer said Britain takes pride in its tolerance, diversity, and unity, adding that “an attack on any community is an attack on all of us.”
He explained that the new funding will be directed toward enhancing the security of mosques and Islamic centers, ensuring worshippers feel safe in their places of faith.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned recent hate crimes, saying: “An attack on a mosque is not just a crime—it’s a horrifying act that threatens the fabric of our society. We must stand together against those who seek to divide us.”
According to government officials, the fund will support the installation of CCTV systems, alarm networks, and security training across mosques, community centers, and educational institutions throughout the UK.
Experts say the initiative comes amid a notable rise in Islamophobic attacks, and the move is expected to rebuild trust, safety, and social harmony within Britain’s diverse society.
