A devastating incident has occurred in the Mediterranean Sea near the Tunisian coastal city of Mahdia, after a boat carrying migrants bound for Europe capsized. At least 40 people are reported to have died in the tragedy.
According to foreign news agencies, Tunisian authorities confirmed that the vessel was carrying 70 individuals. A rescue operation was launched immediately, managing to save 30 people from the water. However, the bodies of 40 victims were also recovered.
The migrants on board were reportedly from various African countries, undertaking the dangerous sea journey in hopes of finding a better future.
A Tunisian police official described the sinking as “one of the deadliest maritime accidents in the region this year,” highlighting the persistent dangers of the migration route.
