NEW YORK – Hollywood actress Sydney Sweeney has revealed the extraordinary physical transformation she underwent for her latest role as a female boxer, disclosing that a relentless three-month training regimen led her to gain 35 pounds (approximately 16 kg) for the part.
Speaking at a Q&A session during the Hamptons International Film Festival on Saturday, Sweeney offered insights into the demanding diet and exercise routine she adopted to portray boxing legend Christy Martin in the upcoming biopic, Christy.
The actress outlined her rigorous schedule: “Every morning I would weight train for an hour, then I would go and do boxing for three hours, and then another hour of weight training at night. I did that every single day for three months, with a nutritionist, so eating a bunch of food and protein shakes and supplements. I, in that span of time, gained, like, 35lbs,” Sweeney shared.
The Euphoria star also disclosed the profound involvement of the real-life Martin during the making of the film, which added an extra layer of authenticity and emotional depth to her performance.
“She kind of became my best friend. Having her with us was a really powerful experience,” Sweeney said of the bond they formed.
Reflecting on the unique process of portraying someone who was physically present, the Echo Valley actress noted: “I’ve never had the person who I’m portraying watch me. You’re never really sure what they’re thinking. But as it went on, I just wanted her there the entire time because I was able to study her and listen to her and have her thoughts and opinions there whenever I needed.”
Sweeney concluded by emphasizing her commitment to character immersion: “I try to lose myself completely for a role, so I try not to carry any of my own stuff into their life. But I honestly learned so much from Christy that I applied to myself.” The anecdote highlights the intense commitment required for actors today to embody their roles both physically and emotionally.
