Actress Aimee Lou Wood has never hidden her personal quirks, but she praises her fans for accepting her authenticity. The White Lotus star attributes her confidence to the positive feedback she receives from her audience.
In an interview with the Radio Times, Wood stated, “I think of those people who thank me for being weird because it means they can embrace their weirdness.”
The actress revealed that she actively practices mindfulness to combat negative intrusive thoughts. “It gives me confidence on the days where sometimes that little demon comes back up [in my head],” she said.
It is well-documented that Wood battled multiple mental health challenges as a teen, including social anxiety, obsessive thoughts, ADHD, body dysmorphia, and bulimia. She described the crippling cycle of self-doubt: “I get it so bad after social situations: obsessive, repetitive thoughts of, ‘Did I really say that? That was weird.’”
In a separate discussion, Wood reflected on the difficulty of growing up with conditions her peers did not share. “Growing up, I felt a deep need to be ‘normal,’ but then I realised all my favourite people… were weird,” she recalled, citing characters like Jane Eyre from Charlotte Brontë’s novel.
Ultimately, Wood has reframed her self-acceptance of her diagnoses by choosing to view it as a “superpower.” She concluded with a powerful message of body positivity and internal validation: “Beauty is internal and I’m my own human-shaped self, and that’s OK. I don’t need to fit into any box.”
