Dairy farmers in Karachi have formally demanded an per litre increase in milk prices, attributing the necessity to heavy financial losses directly caused by the recent devastating floods.
Addressing a press conference held at the Karachi Press Club, leaders of the Dairy Farmers Association stated that the recent deluge had severely affected the local dairy farming community.
They issued a grim warning: “The rates of almost every commodity used in the dairy industry have surged by nearly ,” cautioning that if this inflationary trend persists, the animals face the risk of starving to death. The dairy farmers claimed they are already sustaining staggering losses amounting to billion per day related to the ongoing milk supply operations.
They noted key statistics: “More than one million animals [cattle and buffalo] are housed in different city colonies, while the industry supplies million litres of milk to Karachi on a daily basis.”
In light of the prevailing economic conditions, the farmers declared that an immediate increase of per litre in the price of milk is unavoidable. They have issued a threat to stage a protest outside the Sindh Chief Minister’s House if a formal notification for the price hike is not issued by October 1. Milk is currently being sold at per litre throughout the city.
