WhatsApp has rolled out a new capability called ‘Writing Help,’ which assists users in composing messages more rapidly by providing AI-generated text suggestions.
The feature can propose various tones, including professional, humorous, and supportive, and is functional in both direct messages (DMs) and group chats.
Users activate ‘Writing Help’ by tapping a new pencil icon while they are typing a message. The tool then instantly displays several AI-created versions of the text, allowing users to either choose one or disregard the suggestions entirely. The feature is specifically designed to offer options without altering the standard messaging experience for individuals who prefer manual typing.
‘Writing Help’ operates using Meta’s Private Processing technology. The company states that this system ensures the AI can provide suggestions without granting Meta or WhatsApp access to either the original messages or the generated responses. WhatsApp emphasized that this technology has been tested and verified with the support of the security community.
The feature is optional and is turned off by default. Users who choose not to utilize ‘Writing Help’ can continue using WhatsApp normally without any change to their messaging experience. The company stressed that engaging with the feature does not compromise user privacy.
Initially, ‘Writing Help’ is available in English for users in the United States and a select few other countries. WhatsApp plans to roll out this feature to more languages and regions later this year, with an expected availability in Pakistan soon.
