The ICC Board has decided to suspend USA Cricket, citing “repeated and continued breaches of its obligations as an ICC member under the ICC’s constitution.” A statement released on Tuesday night specified that these breaches include, but are not limited to, the organization’s “failure to implement a functional governance structure.” The ICC also pointed to a “lack of progress toward achieving National Governing Body status with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).” Furthermore, the international body mentioned that USA Cricket had taken “significant actions that have caused reputational damage to cricket in the United States and around the world,” without providing specific details.
Despite the suspension, the United States men’s team will still participate in the T20 World Cup next February, with the ICC temporarily overseeing the team’s management. The US team had qualified for the 2026 tournament after reaching the Super Eight stage of the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup.
The ICC stated that “the suspension is an unfortunate but necessary step to protect the long-term interests of the game.” It added that its “top priority remains ensuring that the athletes and the sport itself are not impacted due to the suspension.” USA Cricket had been previously placed “on notice” at the 2024 ICC annual general meeting for “non-compliance with membership criteria” and was given a 12-month period to implement the required changes.
