Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will lead Pakistan’s delegation to the high-level segment of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, starting on September 22, 2025. The Foreign Office (FO) has announced that the delegation will also include Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and other senior officials.
A key part of the visit will be the Prime Minister’s participation in a meeting of select Islamic leaders with US President Donald Trump. This will be the first time Prime Minister Sharif directly interacts with President Trump since he took office in January. Earlier this year, President Trump hosted Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir, at the White House without senior civilian officials present.
During his address at the UNGA, Prime Minister Sharif is expected to call on the international community to resolve long-standing issues such as the prolonged occupation and denial of the right to self-determination, particularly in Indian-occupied Kashmir and Palestine. He will also draw attention to the severe crisis in Gaza and urge for decisive action to end the suffering of the Palestinian people.
The Prime Minister will also share Pakistan’s perspective on regional security and other global issues, including climate change, terrorism, Islamophobia, and sustainable development. He is scheduled to attend several high-level events on the sidelines of the UNGA session, including meetings of the UN Security Council, the Global Development Initiative (GDI), and a special event on Climate Action.
Furthermore, he will hold bilateral meetings with various world leaders and senior UN officials to discuss issues of mutual interest. The FO stated that the Prime Minister will reaffirm Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and its role as a Security Council member to uphold the UN Charter, prevent conflict, foster peace, and promote global prosperity.
The upcoming meeting with President Trump and other Muslim leaders follows a period of heightened tensions in the Middle East. Recently, a targeted Israeli strike in Qatar killed Hamas officials, which led to widespread international condemnation and prompted an emergency joint session of the Arab League and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. The summit called for a review of ties with Israel and for collective measures to prevent its actions against the Palestinian people.
