A high-level meeting, chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi at the Capital Development Authority (CDA) headquarters, finalized a new rail link project connecting Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The initiative aims to provide a modern and efficient public transport option for residents of both cities.
According to a press release from the interior ministry, the rail link will connect Margalla Railway Station in Islamabad to Saddar Railway Station in Rawalpindi, with the journey taking just 20 minutes. The project is set to launch on March 23, with the first phase utilizing the existing railway track. A second phase will extend the service to other parts of the federal capital. Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi confirmed that the project would require the import of modern Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) from China or another country. The formal PC-I of the project will be submitted to the Planning Division soon.
Project Logistics and Benefits Under the agreed framework, the railway ministry will be responsible for providing and maintaining the track infrastructure, while the CDA will manage the rail operations. A formal agreement is expected to be signed next week. To enhance connectivity, CDA’s electric buses and the existing Metro bus service will serve as feeder services to the Margalla Station.
The project aims to reduce traffic congestion, save time and fuel, and provide a cost-effective alternative for commuters. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that the project reflects the Prime Minister’s vision for public-centric development. Similarly, Railway Minister Hanif Abbasi called it a milestone for public welfare, providing swift and convenient travel.
Pakistan Railways Introduces Inclusive Reforms In a separate development, Pakistan Railways announced a series of inclusive reforms aimed at ensuring safety and dignity for women and persons with special abilities. In a meeting chaired by Minister Hanif Abbasi, it was decided that gender-responsive protocols would be implemented across railway stations and trains. This includes displaying awareness posters, broadcasting regular announcements, and providing specialized training to railway staff to ensure a safe and peaceful travel environment for women.
Additionally, all upcoming refurbished trains will include designated seating for persons with special abilities. Wheelchairs will also be made available at major railway stations to facilitate their travel. Minister Abbasi emphasized that these initiatives reflect Pakistan Railways’ commitment to providing a modern, inclusive, and passenger-friendly system for all its passengers.
