Iran’s Revolutionary Guards announced on Saturday that they have arrested eight individuals suspected of attempting to transmit sensitive site coordinates and details about senior military figures to Israel’s Mossad. The report was carried by Iranian state media.
The suspects are accused of providing this information to the Mossad spy agency during the Israeli air war on Iran in June. That conflict saw Israel attack Iranian nuclear facilities and kill top military commanders and civilians, marking the worst blow to the Islamic Republic since the 1980s war with Iraq.
Iran retaliated with a barrage of missiles on Israeli military sites, infrastructure, and cities. The United States entered the war on June 22 with strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
A Guards statement alleged that the suspects received specialized training from Mossad through online platforms. It said they were apprehended in northeastern Iran before they could carry out their plans, and that materials for building launchers, bombs, explosives, and booby traps were seized.
Earlier this month, state media reported that Iranian police had arrested as many as 21,000 “suspects” during the 12-day war with Israel, though the specific charges were not disclosed.
Human rights groups claim that Iran uses espionage charges and swift executions as tools for broader political repression.
