An anti-terrorism court in Lahore has sent Shahrez Khan, the nephew of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan, to jail on judicial remand. The case is linked to the attack on Jinnah House during the riots of May 9.
Shahrez, the son of Imran’s sister Aleema Khan, was arrested on August 21 in connection with the Jinnah House attack. His brother, Shershah, is also facing charges in the same case.
The May 9 riots erupted across the country in 2023 following the arrest of the PTI founder on corruption charges. The violence included attacks on military and state buildings, with the Jinnah House incident becoming a significant high-profile case.
After his physical remand was completed, Lahore police presented Aleema’s son before ATC Judge Manzer Ali Gill today.
During the hearing, the prosecution requested an extension of his physical remand for further investigation. Judge Gill, however, rejected the police’s request and ordered him to be sent to jail on judicial remand.
It is relevant to note that both Shershah and Shahrez face accusations of allegedly running an anti-state campaign and being involved in the May 9 violence. Sources had previously informed Geo News that the two suspects were primarily arrested for their supposed involvement in the Jinnah House attack.
According to the sources, Shershah was with Hassan Niazi at the time of the Jinnah House attack and had already been named in the case. He faces allegations of arson, vandalism, setting a police van on fire, and “running an anti-state digital campaign for months.” The sources added that he allegedly went into hiding after the violence and later fled to London, where he remained for nearly two years.
