Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stated that his government is working to digitize the economy and transition all transactions to a cashless and digital system. He made these remarks while chairing a review meeting on the digital economy in the federal capital on Sunday.
The Prime Minister expressed his satisfaction with the progress made toward a cashless economy. He instructed all chief secretaries to fully cooperate with the federal government in expanding the Raast system to the district level.
During the meeting, officials were briefed on the steps taken to promote a cashless economy. They were told that digital identifications will be created through the Pakistan Digital Public Infrastructure, which will include information such as national identity card numbers, biometrics, and mobile phone numbers for every person. These digital IDs will then be used for digital payments. The meeting also highlighted that provincial governments have made significant progress in linking their payment systems to the Raast system.
Launch of Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign
Separately, Prime Minister Sharif said that Pakistan is committed to a new tree plantation campaign, utilizing all available means and natural solutions to increase forest cover and soil fertility under its Green Pakistan Programme.
In a message for the Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign, he urged all citizens to take responsibility for this national, environmental, and climate duty. “Let us unite in this national tree plantation campaign and make it a success in a systematic manner so that a green, healthy, clean, and prosperous Pakistan can be our destiny and that of our future generations,” he said.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the campaign is not just a symbolic act, but a national duty to create a healthy environment for future generations and prevent climate change disasters. He added that the government is observing this year’s monsoon campaign with different themes to highlight the importance of tree plantation and the role of various segments of society.
