The director of the upcoming The Toxic reboot, Macon Blair, has revealed details about the special effects used in the film’s production.
In a recent interview with SFX magazine, the Hollywood director shared his fun experience making the movie, emphasizing his unique approach to the horror-comedy genre.
“We wanted it to play in a cartoonish way where even if it’s gross, it’s meant to be fun,” he explained. “It’s never meant to be mean-spirited or cruel or gory in a way that makes you feel repulsed. It’s meant to be gory in a way that makes you go, ‘Hell yeah!’ and have fun with it.”
Blair also noted how the original film served as an inspiration for his own work. “It was hugely inspiring. We were just starting to figure out how to make our own movies in our backyard, and it was something of a template for that,” he said.
The superhero movie stars Peter Dinklage in the lead role, alongside Jacob Tremblay, Julia Davis, Elijah Wood, Taylour Paige, and Jonny Coyne.
Blair told the outlet that the most exciting part of the process was the special effects. “What we were most excited about was the special effects, the blood and stuff,” he said. He concluded by saying that bringing this style to the film with “very skilled technicians and craftspeople” felt like a throwback to his earlier, more experimental days of filmmaking.
The Toxic reboot is scheduled to be released on August 29, 2025.
