Pirates of the Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer has shared a major update about the sixth installment of the franchise, which has been in discussion since 2019. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the 81-year-old producer confirmed that he has spoken to Johnny Depp about reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparrow.
Bruckheimer stated that Depp is open to returning, but there’s a condition: “If he likes the way the part’s written, I think he would do it.” He added that “it’s all about what’s on the page… We are still working on a screenplay.” Bruckheimer noted that while they haven’t yet finalized the script, they are “close.”
The producer also clarified that the new film is a “reboot,” but he would personally love to have Depp in it. He described Depp as an “amazing artist” and a “good friend,” and credited him with creating the iconic character of Captain Jack Sparrow. Bruckheimer said the unique look and personality of the character were Depp’s own interpretation, inspired by “a little Pepé Le Pew and Keith Richards.”
