The sequel to Robert Pattinson’s The Batman is finally set to begin production after facing multiple delays. According to a recent letter from Warner Bros. Discovery to its stakeholders, The Batman Part 2 is scheduled to start filming in spring 2026 for a 2027 release. Variety has reported that the sequel is expected to hit theaters in October 2027.
This announcement comes more than three years after the original Matt Reeves film was released in March 2022. The sequel has been subject to several postponements; in January 2023, James Gunn and Peter Safran announced a release date of October 3, 2025, which was later pushed back to October 2027 in December 2024. In his defense, Gunn took to Threads to explain that a “5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels,” referencing films like Alien, Terminator, Top Gun, and his own Guardians of the Galaxy sequels.
The shareholder letter also mentioned that James Gunn is “busy preparing the next installments of the DC super family,” which includes upcoming projects such as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Clayface, and a new Wonder Woman movie. His Superman reboot, which premiered in July 2025, has already been praised as a major box office success. The studio’s “10-year vision” for the DC Universe also includes a second season of Peacemaker and the premiere of Lanterns.
