Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan recently met with key officials of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), including the President of the Ismaili Council for Pakistan, Nizar Mewawalla, Serena Hotels CEO Aziz Boolani, and Aga Khan Foundation Pakistan CEO Akhtar Iqbal. The Chief Minister praised AKDN’s long-standing contributions to the region in critical areas like education, healthcare, disaster risk reduction, climate resilience, and civil society engagement.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister presented an official letter to His Highness the Aga Khan, requesting assistance in the wake of the recent devastating floods in Gilgit-Baltistan.
In response, Nizar Mewawalla expressed his sympathies with the affected families and assured the Chief Minister of AKDN’s full cooperation and support for flood-hit areas, focusing on building community resilience.
AKDN has committed to a comprehensive plan to assist with early recovery and rehabilitation. This includes green retrofitting and repairs for seven schools, solarization and repair of solar facilities in government health centers, and the rehabilitation of drinking water supply schemes and protective infrastructure. Additionally, eight Community Emergency Response Teams will be established in flood-affected areas. The network will also ensure the delivery of portable medical equipment and supplies, set up mobile healthcare units, and conduct early identification and management for 3,000 undernourished women and children in the affected regions.
