Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted a new, intense monsoon spell to begin on Monday, bringing heavy rainfall to many parts of the country and raising concerns of flash floods in low-lying areas. The new weather system is expected to bring widespread showers to northern and central regions from August 4 to 7.
Regional Impact: Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan are at risk of cloudbursts. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is also bracing for strong winds and thunderstorms. Punjab, which has already been severely affected, and the capital, Islamabad, will continue to experience heavy rains. In the south, Sindh and Balochistan may see scattered rainfall on August 6.
Flood Warnings and Preparedness: The PMD has issued a strong warning that the anticipated flash floods could cause streams to overflow and drainage systems to clog. Local authorities have been directed to prepare for these conditions. Meteorologists suggest that due to climate change, this year’s monsoon season could extend into late September, several weeks longer than usual.
PDMA Alert in Punjab: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in Punjab has issued an alert for the sixth monsoon spell, with heavy rains predicted in most districts from August 5. The authority has instructed commissioners and deputy commissioners to take necessary precautions. The PDMA has advised citizens in flood-prone and low-lying areas to be cautious and to use helpline 1129 in case of an emergency.
