Pete Davidson, 31, recently shared the story behind a “humiliating” tattoo he ultimately had to get covered. The SNL star explained that he was so inspired by a comment from legendary comedian Dave Chappelle that he had it permanently inked on his chest.
During his appearance on First We Feast’s Hot Ones series, Davidson recalled Chappelle attending one of his comedy routines and complimenting him afterward. “This was before [Dave] was back, so seeing him was like crazy, going ‘What the f—?'” Davidson said. “And I got off stage and he was like, ‘I watched your whole set — it was really good,’ and I was like, ‘Oh, thanks.'”
Davidson then asked Chappelle about his creative process: “You know, how do you keep coming up with new stuff? I’m working on new stuff and it’s like difficult,” to which Chappelle famously replied, “Jokes come and go, but swag is forever.”
“And guess who got that tattooed on his chest?” Davidson quipped, revealing his youthful enthusiasm.
The comedian then explained the unfortunate aftermath: “I covered it with Jaws because I needed something huge to black it out. I just put a giant shark over it.” Davidson reflected on the decision, admitting, “That’s pretty bad, dude – but he was like my idol. He still is, but that’s so dumb. I could’ve just told people he said that to me.”
