In the wake of devastating floods and landslides triggered by cloudbursts in Gilgit Baltistan (GB), the National Highway Authority (NHA) has significantly stepped up its efforts to restore traffic across several disrupted sections of the Karakoram Highway (KKH), the agency announced on Wednesday.
According to the NHA spokesperson, acting on direct instructions from Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, dedicated teams are working tirelessly around the clock with heavy machinery and manpower to clear blocked routes. The NHA remains fully committed to these ongoing operations, with active work in all rain and landslide-affected areas throughout Gilgit Baltistan.
At Tatta Pani, where a recent landslide had interrupted traffic, the road has once again been successfully cleared. This section of the highway had been reopened two days prior but was subsequently blocked again by fresh landslides. NHA teams have now fully restored connectivity.
The crucial stretch from Loshi Bridge to Naran has been completely cleared and opened to traffic. Similarly, the road from Lothian to Noshi Bridge is now accessible for vehicles, while Chilas Main Bazaar and Babusar Bazaar have also been reopened for movement, restoring access for both local residents and travelers.
Additionally, the road from Babusar Top to Chilas has been cleared and is now open for traffic. The Jaglot–Skardu Road, a vital regional artery, was also successfully cleared by NHA teams and is now open for two-way traffic.
Traffic restoration efforts are actively progressing in the landslide-affected Loshi Bridge area, where essential materials have already begun arriving. The NHA has pledged to resume traffic there as swiftly as possible.
To ensure optimal coordination and efficiency, all clearance operations are being continuously monitored from a dedicated control room established at NHA Headquarters. Chairman NHA Muhammad Sheheryar Sultan is personally overseeing the entire clearance and rehabilitation process, ensuring real-time updates and prompt operational responses.
The NHA spokesperson affirmed that road restoration efforts will persist without interruption until all blocked routes across the region are fully functional and accessible.
