Continuous monsoon rains in Murree, a popular hill station, have resulted in a significant landslide on Salgran GT Road. This event has caused considerable damage and traffic disruption, and unfortunately, Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas was injured during a site visit.
According to the district administration, a large section of GT Road near Salgran was washed away by the heavy rainfall, leading authorities to immediately close the route to all traffic. Commuters and tourists are advised to use the alternative Murree Expressway until the road is reopened.
Deputy Commissioner Injured During Inspection
In a dramatic turn of events, as Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi and Murree DPO Asif Amin Awan were inspecting the landslide site on Thursday, a further rockfall occurred. A large stone struck the Deputy Commissioner, fracturing his foot. The DPO’s vehicle narrowly avoided being hit by the falling debris.
The Murree DC was promptly taken to THQ Hospital for treatment, and officials have reported his condition as stable.
Ongoing Rainfall and Relief Efforts
The Murree region has experienced 41mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, causing numerous landslides and road closures. Following instructions from Deputy Commissioner Abbas, all relevant departments and emergency teams are on high alert and actively engaged in relief operations in the affected areas. District administration teams, alongside other agencies, are working tirelessly to clear debris and ensure public safety.
Travel Advisory for Tourists
Authorities have issued an urgent advisory for tourists and local residents, urging them to:
- Stay updated on weather forecasts before planning any travel to Murree.
- Avoid unnecessary travel during the current spell of heavy rain.
- Use the Murree Expressway as an alternative until GT Road is fully repaired and reopened.
Officials have confirmed that GT Road will remain closed until the rain subsides and all repair and clearance work is completed.
