With the cinematic release of Superman less than a week away, critics who have had the opportunity to review the superhero movie have begun sharing their initial impressions on various social media platforms.
Film critic Bryan Sudfield expressed on X (formerly Twitter), “‘Superman’ ascends with genuine emotion, wit, and distinctive flair—a courageous yet authentic interpretation of the iconic hero.” He further elaborated, “James Gunn establishes a fresh tone while respectfully honoring the character’s heritage, and David Corenswet’s performance radiates sincerity and immense strength. This marks a promising and exhilarating commencement for DC’s new cinematic epoch.”
Brandon Davis, an entertainment journalist, lauded David Corenswet’s portrayal of the Man of Steel. He remarked, “David Corenswet embodies an extraordinary version of [Superman] with heartfelt sincerity, heroic spirit, inherent purity, and truly inspiring qualities,” adding, “The on-screen connection between Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Clark and Lois is simply phenomenal.”
Nevertheless, James Gunn’s forthcoming DC cinematic endeavor did not receive a favorable review from movie critic Peter Howell. He highlighted the film’s unconvincing narrative and faulted the director for prioritizing visual aesthetics over substantive content.
Howell observed, “James Gunn excels at crafting spectacular visuals and conceiving alien landscapes, but his storytelling abilities are less impressive.” He continued, “David Corenswet portrays a boyishly amiable Superman, who consistently finds himself in skirmishes; he would be a more suitable lead for a Dudley Do-Right film.”
“Rachel Brosnahan delivers a sharp-witted Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor comes across as more irritating than genuinely villainous. The undisputed highlight of the production is the superdog Krypto, who captivates in every scene he appears in — I would much rather watch a film centered around him.”
