Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari stated on Thursday that the decision regarding the suspension of cellular services during Muharram will be announced at the “eleventh hour.” Addressing the media in Lahore about the arrangements for Muharram-ul-Haram, Bokhari recalled that mobile services were not suspended across Punjab last year. However, she indicated that the option might be utilized this time, particularly along the routes of mourning processions.
Bokhari stressed that it would be premature to make a definitive statement at this point. She added that the Chief Minister will make a final decision on the matter, after reviewing reports on the prevailing security conditions, when the time is appropriate.
Meanwhile, Bokhari also confirmed that Section 144 is currently enforced across the province to maintain law and order and prevent sectarian unrest. In response to a query, she mentioned that a decision regarding a ban on pillion riding would also be shared with the media soon.
Federal Interior Minister Confirms Consultative Approach for Muharram Security and Mobile Services
Earlier today, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that the decision to suspend mobile phone or internet services during Muharram would be made in consultation with the provinces. He made this announcement while chairing a meeting to review the national security plan ahead of the religious month.
The meeting focused on security preparations for Muharram across all provinces, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), and the federal capital, Islamabad. Officials unanimously agreed that strict action would be taken against individuals spreading religious hatred on social media platforms. Naqvi affirmed that all necessary measures and decisions related to Muharram security would be undertaken through mutual consultation, with the federal government providing full support to maintain peace during this sacred month.
Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Set to Meet for Muharram Moon Sighting
In a related development, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is scheduled to convene today in Quetta for the sighting of the crescent of Muharram 1447 Hijri. The meeting will be presided over by the committee’s chairman, Moulana Abdul Khabir Azad. Concurrently, meetings of zonal and district Ruet-e-Hilal Committees will also be held at their respective headquarters.
