Squid Game actress Park Gyu-young has expressed her profound gratitude for her role as a guard in the immensely popular series.
In Squid Game, the guards of the sadistic competition execute participants who fail to complete the tasks. These guards are distinguishable by their pink overalls and masks that completely obscure their faces.
Season two of the show delved into the backstories of the guards, offering viewers a glimpse into the poignant narrative of Park’s character, Kang No-eul.
“Even though we saw a lot of pink guards in season one we didn’t get to see the human side of them,” Park explained, as reported by The Mirror.
She reflected, “We just saw them as very merciless people, but they must have their backstories. They must have their emotions. So, I was very honored to be able to play this character, No-eul, in seasons two and three.”
She added, “The backstories of the pink guards and the emotional landscape that they hold… I think it was very meaningful that we got a peek into the other side of the system.”
Elsewhere, Park acknowledged the challenges of breathing and acting while wearing the masks, yet deemed it a minor inconvenience for being part of Netflix’s biggest show to date.
Park stated, “I know it’s a good-looking costume, but if you really wear it… it’s actually really hot.”
She continued, “It’s kind of hard to breathe and even hard to talk in those masks.”
Park Gyu-young further emphasized: “But, I was really thrilled to wear those costumes because the pink guard is one of the most iconic characters in Squid Game. So I didn’t care about it.”
