Karachi experienced another earthquake on Friday evening, with its intensity recorded at 2.8 magnitude by the country’s seismic monitoring center. The National Seismic Monitoring Centre of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) stated that the earthquake’s epicenter was located 13 kilometers southeast of Korangi, at a depth of 4 kilometers.
The seismic monitoring center added that the earthquake struck the port city at 5:28 PM. Fortunately, no damage or injuries were reported, but residents experienced panic after the tremors.
This latest seismic activity brings the total number of low-intensity tremors in Karachi to 48 since June 1, according to PMD’s data. Earlier, speaking to Geo News, Chief Meteorologist Ameer Hyder Leghari explained that the Landhi Fault Line has become active after several decades and is currently undergoing a normalization phase.
Hyder advised that buildings situated on fault lines should be able to withstand tremors up to magnitude 6. He also noted that any cracks reported in some houses are likely due to structural issues. Leghari further added that another nearby fault near Thana Bula Khan is also contributing to the seismic activity.
