As the nation continues to experience a scorching heatwave, Karachi, the port city, is preparing for a significant escalation in temperatures starting today. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the mercury is projected to reach 40°C.
Coastal areas may feel even hotter, with the perceived temperature potentially rising to 45°C due to the combined effects of high humidity and the absence of a sea breeze. Daytime hours are likely to bring intense sunshine with minimal wind activity, contributing to increased discomfort for residents.
As per the Met Office, winds from the west are currently blowing at a speed of 17 kilometers per hour, and the humidity level stands at 74%, further intensifying the sweltering conditions. The weather is predicted to remain exceptionally hot and humid over the next 24 hours.
Meteorological analyst Owais Hyder has indicated that a low-pressure system is presently located over the Indian state of Maharashtra. However, this system is not anticipated to bring any rainfall to Sindh, including Karachi. Consequently, no rain is forecast for the city throughout the week.
Temperatures are expected to persist at high levels, with mercury readings hovering between 40°C and 41°C from Wednesday through Friday. Citizens are strongly advised to implement necessary precautions against heat-related illnesses and to avoid outdoor activities during the peak afternoon hours.
Health experts have urged the public to adopt preventive measures to mitigate the risk of heat-related ailments.
Medical professionals recommend consuming ample fluids at regular intervals, including water, lemon water, yogurt-based beverages, and lassi. They also advise wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing to maintain a cool body temperature.
For individuals venturing outdoors, using a cap, scarf, or umbrella is recommended for protection against direct sunlight. Experts further suggest avoiding heavy, spicy, and fried foods, opting instead for light and fresh meals.
In the event of symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, weakness, or high fever, immediate medical attention should be sought.
