WhatsApp is experimenting with a new feature aimed at limiting the number of broadcast messages users can send each month, indicating a potential change in how the popular messaging platform handles one-to-many communication.
According to WABetaInfo, the new feature is currently accessible to beta testers through the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.14.15 update, available on the Google Play Store.
Certain beta testers can now explore a dedicated broadcast management section directly within the app settings, allowing users to easily access and manage their broadcast lists.
This eliminates the need for users to rely on the separate entry point found in the overflow menu of the Chats tab.
All active broadcast lists will be displayed in this new section, along with details such as the number of broadcast messages sent and the number still available for the current month.
Currently, the widely used Meta-owned instant messaging app is testing a restriction that caps users at a maximum of 35 broadcast messages per month. However, this limit may vary depending on factors such as the user’s account type, region, or other currently unknown variables.
It’s important to note that this cap may not be final, and WhatsApp could adjust it before a wider rollout.
This restriction encourages users to utilize more contemporary and scalable communication tools. For instance, WhatsApp offers status updates, enabling users to share content with all their contacts without any sending limitations.
Furthermore, WhatsApp Channels are specifically designed for one-to-many communication, making them an ideal tool for sharing updates with a large audience.
The new feature also intends to mitigate the risk of spam and promote a more deliberate and thoughtful use of the broadcast feature.
Additionally, WhatsApp is developing a feature for business users that will allow them to extend their monthly broadcast limit through a subscription plan.
Even with this option, businesses are still encouraged to consider alternatives like status updates and channels, which are effective and already well-integrated into the app.
The new feature is expected to be rolled out to a broader user base in the coming weeks.
